August 2021 – Jonathan Smith is Artist of the Month at Kellie Miller Arts, Brighton, where the gallery has received a new collection of his works. Smith lives near the South Downs, having completed post-graduate teacher training in Brighton and taught in schools in Sussex before becoming Head of Creative Arts at Varndean College in Brighton. |
Gallery curator Kellie Miller said: “I find his work tranquil, but sometimes with unexpected turbulence, suggesting that still waters run deep. This is true of him as a man as well as his art. I want to immerse myself in his paintings, sit on that water’s edge or stand by that field. I am awestruck by his painting technique, which employs classical painterly skills to add a timeless quality to his pieces. |
His most recent paintings show an increasing engagement with the materiality of paint and the history of the Hebridean Islands, where his family have lived for centuries. He is a master at capturing the changing moods and light. The relationship between people, place and time is at the heart of these dramatic new works. These atmospheric paintings celebrate particular moments when all these factors are in play, and the viewer is transported to the shores and villages of the islands. |
