Phoenix Brighton and Sussex Book Arts Collective present a special exhibition event ‘Kim L Pace – works on paper’.
British artist Kim L Pace conjures beguiling figures, which are conduits for universal human emotional states like optimism, alienation and pain.
Referencing the history of caricature from Goya to Grosz, the grotesque and folkloric practices – such as puppetry from the dark heart of Europe and the transformative use of masks – Pace’s characters are both of the world and otherworldly.
Deftly juxtaposing disparate elements, Pace brings together imagery that occupies our collective unconscious with a highly inventive personal language, to make observations about contemporary cultural hybridity.
Initially known for her significant contribution to establishing drawing as an independent activity, Pace’s practice also encompasses installation, artist books and animated film.
Her work has been commissioned and exhibited internationally, including solo & group shows in the UK, USA, Ireland, Australia, Japan, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy & Norway. She has held several residencies, fellowships and other awards. Recently she has been acting Pathway Leader for Sculpture at the University of Arts London.
Recent exhibitions and projects include:
Eastside Projects, Birmingham; Royal Academy of Art, London; Arcadia_Missa, London; Millennium Films, NYC; Enclave, London; Castlefield Gallery, Manchester; The Czech Center, NYC; Wimbledon Space, London; Palazzo Delle Esposizioni, Rome; Casa del Cinema, Villa Borghese, Rome; Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich; The Henry Moore Institute, Leeds; Salisbury Arts Centre.
