Judi Thomas’ illustration immediately presents a paradox of intricacy and simplicity. Stark black and white imagery is offset by complex detail and graceful flowing lines which appear to merge Art Nouveau and the surreal. Her work draws parallels with the most controversial of art nouveau artists; Brighton-born erotic specialist Aubrey Beardsley. The ‘Humans’ series presented at Ground until August 7th, also reflects a surrealist Picasso-like quality. It’s a triumph of beautiful freehand drawing that continually presents the discovery of hidden depths, new objects and meaning, inviting the viewer to embark on a similar journey of improvisation and imagination experienced by the artist in its creation”.
