This exhibition will offer an in depth look into the Jerwood Collection of 20th and 21st century British art, exploring the history and personal stories of the collection’s development.
The Jerwood Collection comprises primarily of paintings, works on paper and prints by British artists working between the First World War and the 1960s. Highlights include pieces by artists such as Sir Stanley Spencer, Laurence Stephen Lowry, Walter Sickert and Augustus John. The exhibition will provide the opportunity for the most extensive display of the collection since the gallery first opened. Included will be a number of key works, which have not yet been seen on public display at the gallery. This includes a number of works previously on long-term loan such as Craigie Aitchisons’ Crucifixion (1994) and a series of maquettes by a variety of artists including, Sir Jacob Epstein (1880-1959), Dame Elisabeth Frink, (1930-1993), and Henry Moore (1898-1986).
