Lighthouse BFI SHORTS NOMINATED FOR 2014 BAFTAs ** Lighthouse, Brighton

Lighthouse is thrilled to announce that three of their BFI Shorts have been nominated for this year\’s BAFTA Awards.
Three out of the five short films nominated for the Best British Short Film category at the 2014 BAFTA Awards were produced through the BFI Shorts scheme, managed by Lighthouse and funded by the BFI’s Film Fund.
The films are: Keeping Up With The Joneses (Michael Pearce, Selina Lim, Megan Rubens), Orbit Ever After (Jamie Stone, Chee-Lan Chan, Len Rowles) and Sea View (Jane Linfoot, Anna Duffield)
These nominations come after two years of intensive work on the BFI Shorts scheme – a major short film production initiative – which has supported the development and production of seventeen high-level shorts as part of the BFI’s commitment to support emerging filmmaking talent.
The films are all making a strong impression on the international film festival circuit, and have already bagged a number of major awards. We are delighted for the filmmakers to be recognised with these nominations, and extend our warmest congratulations to them and the talented cast and crew involved with each of the productions.
Orbit Ever After is a visually striking sci-fi romance which takes place hundreds of miles above the earth. But when you live in orbit, aboard a ramshackle space hovel with the most risk-averse family imaginable, it isn’t easy to follow your heart – especially when the girl of your dreams is spinning around earth the wrong way. Written and directed by Jamie Stone and starring Mackenzie Cook, Bronagh Gallagher and Thomas Brodie-Sangster, the film was awarded the Brief Encounters Grand Prix following its premiere at the 2013 Encounters festival.
Black comedy Keeping Up With The Joneses tells the story of MP’s wife Celia, played by Maxine Peake, who discovers her husband’s true colours when she is taken hostage by his criminal business associates. During their time together, both her and her kidnapper end up learning a thing or two about themselves. The film is directed by Michael Pearce who was also nominated for a Best British Short BAFTA in 2011.
In her coming-of-age film, which features a knock-out performance from newcomer Eloise Smyth, Jane Linfoot‘s Sea View is a portrait of a teenage girl struggling to navigate her way through a brief encounter with an older man, set against the backdrop of a traditional British seaside town. Jane is the subject of a retrospective at this year’s London Short Film Festival, and in the autumn of last year was awarded production funding by the BFI’s Film Fund for her first feature.
