Artists Open Houses offer you the unique opportunity to visit artists in their homes and studios and to buy work directly from them. As well viewing artwork by established and emerging local, regional and international artists, many exhibitors display ceramics, homewares, crafts, jewellery, children’s toys, Christmas cards, tree decorations and preserves. In many houses you can sample festive food and drinks as you browse, easing you into your Christmas shopping, away from the high street crowds. Keeping things local, supporting the city and region’s artists, whilst accessing unique and personal gifts in inspiring environments, are just some of the pleasures of the Artists Open Houses Winter festival.

This winter, Open Houses include a seniors’ residential centre; a visual cultural dialogue between emerging local and African artists; an opportunity to have a family photographic portrait and the chance to step in to a Nordic Christmas experience!

The festival offers a wonderful opportunity to discover really exciting, inspiring and distinctive new work, alongside a host of unique handmade Christmas gifts, as well as providing a great day out exploring all areas of the city, from West Hove to Rottingdean and beyond.

Don’t forget our new Virtual Open Houses strand, including online video tours round artists’ houses, as well individual online galleries. You can hear about the artists’ work, the processes of making and ideas behind their work and buy directly from the artists and makers without leaving home!

Who can take part in AOH?

Anyone living in the 01273 telephone area can take part in the Artists Open Houses (AOH) Festival as an Open House venue. Registration costs can be shared by all artists exhibiting in one venue, meaning that taking part in the festival can be affordable for everyone.

If you live outside the 01273 telephone area, you can still take part in AOH festivals by becoming a ‘guest artist’ exhibiting your work in someone else’s Open House. Take a look at the AOH Directory of artists who are looking for houses to show in.

“ Artists Open Houses connect artists and makers with an audience of art-lovers, buyers and industry professionals – and is also fun to take part in, exhibiting with your friends in your own home.”
Judy Stevens, Artists Open Houses Festival Director

AOH would like to thank Arts Council England and Brighton and Hove City Council for their valuable support over the last few months.
