Gallery 35 September exhibition features the work of Hastings based artist Annie Mackin.
Annie explains the inspiration for her multi-sensory show. “The word perfume comes from the Latin, ‘per fumus’ meaning ‘through smoke’. This show is a visualisation of scent. For me, scent invokes flashes of colour from memories much like synaesthesia and I was compelled to create and represent scent visually through paintings. Collaborating with Amanda Carr of ‘We Wear Perfume,’ we selected a Chypre scent by Histoires de Parfum. This fragrance kindled colours and shapes in my mind, which are represented in the seven works using different mediums, techniques and scale. Alongside this, having an increasing interest in ancient pagan goddesses since being in lockdown as well as becoming a new mother, fed into the origins of Aphrodite and the Chypre fragrance. I wanted to create a mystical otherworldly softness conjuring up the idea of Aphrodite sleeping on a bed of moss in Cyprus, where she was born of sea foam. This is the basis of the Chypre fragrance family. The scent will be diffused in the gallery during the show to create a poly sensory experience”.
