Brighton Festival is the biggest and most established annual multi-arts festival in England, returning from 2 to 24 May 2020.
A celebration of music, theatre, dance, circus, art, film, literature, debate, outdoor and community events, Brighton Festival takes place in familiar and unusual locations across Brighton & Hove and further afield for three weeks every May.
Established in 1967, Brighton Festival is known for its ambitious and daring programme that aims to make the most of the city’s distinctive cultural atmosphere, drawing some of the most innovative artists and companies from the UK and around the world.
Since 2009 Brighton Festival has attracted a wealth of inspiring and internationally significant Guest Directors who bring cohesion to the artistic programme. The inaugural Guest Director was British sculptor Anish Kapoor (2009), followed by musician Brian Eno (2010), Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi (2011), actress and human rights campaigner Vanessa Redgrave (2012), poet, author and broadcaster Michael Rosen (2013), choreographer Hofesh Shechter (2014), award-winning author Ali Smith (2015), pioneering artist and musician Laurie Anderson (2016), the acclaimed recording artist, poet, playwright and novelist Kate Tempest (2017), visual artist David Shrigley (2018) and Malian musician, Rokia Traoré (2019) and British and Ethiopian poet, playwright, broadcaster and speaker Lemn Sissay MBE (2020).
Running across three weeks in May, Brighton Festival 2020 opens on Sat 2 May with the popular Children’s Parade, produced in partnership with Brighton based community arts charity Same Sky. Participation events will appear across the city – Our Place will continue to bring free performances and arts activities programmed by and for the communities of Hangleton and East Brighton; Young City Reads encourages school children to share their love of reading and family friendly events and installations will pop-up in unexpected outdoor locations.
