Both Sides Now 3 – Final Frontiers brings together a collection of film and video from China and Hong Kong that explores displacement, migration and memory. The films explore developments within the culture and society of Hong Kong and China over several decades and vary between animation, documentary and artists’ moving image.

Fabrica Film Club: The Punk Singer

Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of the punk band Bikini Kill and dance-punk trio Le Tigre, rose to national attention as the reluctant but never shy voice of the riot grrrl movement. This 2013 documentary takes viewers on a fascinating tour of contemporary music and a view into the life of this fearless leader.
Artist, activist and blogger Jo Harrison will be joining us for this special event with a creative and fun drop-in activity.
Free popcorn, an affordable bar, blankets and beanbags – plus lovely staff and volunteers – make it extra special.

Larger Scale Working

‘Larger scale working’ seminar led by Frances Lord
Cost £15, £10 concessions.
This seminar is intended for artists and makers who want to find out more about the opportunities and practical considerations involved in working outside the studio, on for example a multi-partner project, public art or a site-specific commission. The seminar will include case studies, making a strong proposal, identifying and responding to briefs, working within budgets, dealing with contracts, effective project management, roles and responsibilities, time management and trouble shooting, copyright and other legal issues.
With a combination of facilitated and informal discussion, we will look at what sort of skills you need, how to match aspirations to budgets, and what constitutes good practice.
Frances Lord is a freelance consultant whose specialism is in the visual arts and crafts. Frances works with architects, developers, environmental agencies, local government, and directly with artists and arts organisations initiating, developing and managing arts and cultural projects. She has experience of curating, commissioning, policy and strategy development, mentoring and coaching, evaluation and fundraising.

Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore, a film by Mark Leckey presented by Ewen Spencer

Ewen Spencer talks about films, photographs and music that have inspired his work. Including Turner Prize-Winner Mark Leckey’s 1999 short, described by The Guardian as ‘perhaps the finest portrayal of British nightlife ever captured’.

State of Control: A Gallery Take-Over
Saturday 22 October, 2pm – 5pm
What happens when young people take over the gallery? We’re looking forward to finding out. Come along, see for yourself and get involved.
The afternoon will include food, music and youth led activities exploring notions of territory. What are our similarities and our differences? What unifies or divides us as a group?
The State of Control collective are a group of young people from the Photoworks Photography club. They have been working with Lindsey Smith and a number of other artists including Lynn Weddle and Ewen Spencer, exploring notions of individual and collective identity. Resulting works show at Jubilee Library until 30 October in the Brighton Photo Biennial exhibition State of Control.

Life Drawing
Tuesdays 25 October 1 & 8 November
Life drawing with Jane Fordham at Fabrica uses the vibrant exhibition programme as a reference point to broaden the drawing experience.
The sessions run in sets of three per month on Tuesday mornings from 10am – 1pm. Each set of three sessions costs £45 and includes model fees, tea and coffee. A1 cartridge paper is available for sale during each session.

Film Forum – Guiding Lights: Life on Screen at Lighthouse

A screening of short films that depict stories and introduce characters less often seen on the big screen, made by or curated by Guiding Lights 8 participants. With diversity and representation high on the agenda across different continents, creative sectors and social spheres, this is an opportunity to see award-winning films which reflect and celebrate the colourfulness and diversity of life. The screening will be followed by a discussion with some of the filmmakers, who will explore the issues raised in the films, as well as the broader considerations surrounding on-screen representation. A relaxed and social event to explore cultural activities together. Join Jonathan Quarterman on a visit to see an exhibition by one of Britain’s most powerful figurative painters; Graham Dean. His watercolour works have been described as ‘extraordinary’ and ‘immensely powerful’ in his relentless investigation of the human body. We will also have an exciting opportunity for a Q&A with the exhibitions curator, Robin Cameron.

Film Extra: Chromasonic Feedback

In California in the early 1940s, John and James Whitney began their experiments with abstract filmmaking, and the construction of their own synthetic sound generating machine, which they used to realise the soundtracks for their Five Film Exercises. A selection of which form the foundation of this programme.
Chromasonic Feedback presents a selection of live action and animated shorts, which marry electronic music with abstraction.

INTO FILM Festival Screening: Fresh Dressed

Fresh Dressed is a fascinating chronicle of hip-hop, urban fashion, and the hustle that brought oversized pants and graffiti-drenched jackets from Orchard Street to high fashion catwalks and Middle America shopping malls. Director Sacha Jenkins’ music-drenched history draws from a rich mix of archival materials and in-depth interviews with rappers, designers, and other industry insiders.

Basic materials and refreshments provided. The materials are specially selected for the event, and if you like them, they will be available to buy at the end of the workshop.

Artist Story-Melissa Campbell

Melissa Campbell (b.1973) works with archives to explore the connections between ourselves, the traces we leave and the journeys we take. Playing detective, she uses photographs and texts as a starting point to investigate the stories they may contain and the function of the object itself. Campbell works across printmaking and photography, making lens-based work, books and films.
For her presentation at Fabrica, Melissa will discuss her work and inspiration in more detail.

INTO FILM Festival: Testament of Youth

Presented in partnership with Strike A Light as part of The Orange Lilies project.
Spanning 1900-1925 this is a loving adaptation of anti-war campaigner Vera Brittain’s memoir. Confronted with the realities of war, we watch Vera adjust to the dramatic shifts in her life, providing a much-needed female experience of World War One on film.
