Four and a half years in the making, ‘Trouble with History’ will feature a selection of tapestry artworks, which explore issues of identity and queerness.
Combining reworked and subverted domestic textile kits, Matt has stitched patterns drawn from Scandinavian knit, Berlin wool work and Op Art, ‘Trouble with History’ refers to both fine art and craft, while refusing to settle completely into either category. The ambiguity that ensues, as well as the subversion of the intended original image, allows for multiple viewpoints and readings into the works.
Matt is best known for his ceramic assemblages, using a slip casting technique to merge items old and new, some of which will be part of the show.
ink_d is very excited to announce that Matt has just been awarded the Artist in Residence position at the V&A in their Ceramics Galleries. Running from October 2015 until the end of March 2016 he will be working in the galleries at the museum and making new work based on the collections. Congratulations Matt!
Private view: Friday 3rd July from 6.30-8.30pm.
