One bar, two special guests, endless ideas; Lighthouse presents Progress Bar, a new monthly night that offers insight into the creative practice of contemporary culture’s most exciting names
From vanguard filmmakers and musicians to trending contemporary artists and thinkers, the Progress Bar connects pioneering figures from around the world for an informal evening of conversation, provocation and inspiration. Share ideas, hear new music, get inspired and enjoy a drink and a bite.
At this special launch event, our guests – acclaimed artist and musician TCF, and writer, editor and film curator Basia Lewandowska Cummings – will share their work across contemporary art, music, technology and journalism, through talks and performance. We will also have a DJ set from local musician Daniel W J Mackenzie. The Progress Bar is hosted by Lighthouse Artistic Director Juha van ’t Zelfde.
TCF is the moniker of Norwegian contemporary artist and musician Lars Holdhus. His work explores themes of code, cryptography and musical composition through the use of visual, sonic, built and written concepts. Holdhus creates a world that draws references from musique concrete, hardstyle, hardcore, poetry and digital artifacts. His practice shifts between art exhibitions and performing music pieces. He has exhibited widely, including at HHDM in Vienna, Vault in Berlin and Polansky Gallery in Prague.
Basia Lewandowska Cummings is a writer, editor and film curator based in London. She writes about film, contemporary art, the internet and the links between them. She is a frequent contributor to frieze, and her work has appeared in The Wire, Film Quarterly, Sight & Sound and The White Review. She is co-author of Four Ways to Read the Cut with Hisham Awad, which explores how to build a new taxonomy of terms relating to cinematic and post-cinematic montage, and curated Open Media Ecologies at the Delfina Foundation, examining strategies deployed by artists working with open data as a source material. In 2014 she joined the Guardian World networks team, focusing specifically on the growing Guardian platform.
Daniel W J Mackenzie is a musician, sound artist and curator working with numerous methods for capturing and sculpting audio material. Under a handful of solo aliases and groups, his releases explore intense expressionistic environments and investigations into acoustic processing. Daniel has curated mixes for a number of online resources including Arctic Circle Radio, Futuresequence and Fluid, and DJs regularly at experimental and alternative music events, exposing his wide ranging influences.
Our March Progress Bar follows Studio Live: Platforms, a day of talks and presentations around the challenges and opportunities of working with online platforms. Platforms presents the people and projects of Lighthouse Studio, an interdisciplinary space for work at the intersection of the arts and technology. You can choose to attend either or both events.
