A3 showcases the work of artists who have studios at Phoenix Brighton. Characterized by the diversity of their practices, our studio members work in a wide range of media including painting, installation, photography, film, drawing, architectural and theatre design, digital media, mixed media, sound, performance, textiles, ceramics, sculpture, jewellery, illustration…and more.A3 showcases the work of over fifty artists by presenting it within the ‘uniform’ format of an A3 space. Two and three-dimensional and time-based work is represented. The exhibition layout mirrors the ‘modular’ design of the Phoenix building, its 60’s era linear structure and freshly painted exterior. In addition, the work is on view without the artist’s name, allowing it to be encountered without any preconceptions. Visitors are invited to participate in a silent auction over the duration of the exhibition, and at the end of the show, the highest bidder for each artwork will become the owner of a piece of contemporary art…and also discover who the artist is. (Our artists range from recent graduates to artists with international reputations.) 25% of the proceeds of the auction will go to support the work of Brighton Housing Trust.
The opening of A3 coincides with a special Phoenix Brighton Open Studios event taking place Saturday and Sunday, 8 & 9 November, 11 am – 5 pm. This is a rare opportunity to see what goes on beyond the public face of Phoenix. Visitors can meet artists in their studios, see work in progress and experience a range of contemporary visual art, all under one roof.
