What is Brighton Digital Festival?

Brighton Digital Festival is a community-driven grassroots festival celebrating digital arts and culture. Held throughout September in Brighton UK, BDF supports an expansive and diverse programme of events, exhibitions and conferences that are developed independently by organisers.

This open programme model has allowed the Brighton Digital Festival to showcase the richness and variety of what goes on across the City and beyond. The model also enables the festival programme to exist at a scale that would be otherwise impossible.

In 2013, the Brighton Digital Festival drew an audience of over 41,000 people to 175 events held throughout September. We’re set to deliver another great festival programme for 2014, and are keen to continue growing the BDF community.

Who’s behind the festival?

BDF is a grassroots festival and the majority of events are organised by members of Brighton’s digital and arts communities.

This network of independent organisers offers a huge and diverse programme that reflects the richness and variety of what goes on across the City. It also enables a festival at a scale that would be otherwise impossible.

How are things coordinated?

BDF coordination takes place by the BDF team, under the guidance of the BDF Consortium, a volunteer steering group made up of representatives from the wider BDF community, who guides the festival’s broader, longer-term direction and development.

The BDF team coordinates the festival out of The FuseBox, the home of BDF Consortium partners WiredSussex. There the BDF team supports the network of organisers, looks after communication and PR, and acts as the voice of the festival.

How is the festival funded?

The majority of the festival’s event programme is delivered by the organisers, each drawing on their own recourses, sponsors, volunteers, partners and wider networks. This includes organisers seeking public funding or commercial sponsorship directly.

The Festival coordination and some elements of the education and arts programme are funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and Brighton & Hove City Council.
