Artwave is a visual arts festival held over three weekends every August and September in the Lewes District. The festival covers the historic town of Lewes, the coastal towns of Seaford and Newhaven and picturesque villages of the South Downs and beyond.
Now in its 21st year, Artwave is one of the biggest and most vibrant open house festivals in the East Sussex calendar. Almost 100 venues open their doors to reveal works in all media by over 400 artists and makers.
The art of surprise
Artwave is an open, un-curated art festival and full of surprises and hidden treats. It shows works by the whole range of artists: From famous historic artists e.g. Lee Miller and Roland Penrose to contemporary artists who exhibit in The National Portrait Gallery and the Royal Academy and craftsmakers whose work is sold in Liberty’s; to mid-career and emerging artists; to art students and traditional hobbyists.
Come on inside
Artwave is renowned for its easy-going atmosphere, quirky tea gardens and for having intriguing and unusual venues. This year is no exception with exhibition spaces including farm buildings; churches, a former Elizabethan stable block, an orchard, a state-of-the-art eco building with wild downland floral roof, an outdoor art gallery and the chapel of the imposing Art Deco Blind Veterans UK building formerly St Dunstan’s in Ovingdean. These, along with all the town and rural open houses and studios, make for a great day out – viewing art, meeting artists, watching craft in action, and looking around houses and buildings not usually open to the public.
