Currently on display in the gallery’s studio is a selection of work created by the young people who took part in this year’s START Programme.
The display offers a snapshot of some of the creative responses students have had and gives an insight into how the participating schools have used the project to inspire and enrich their class work and the curriculum.Over 500 children and young people have visited the Jerwood Gallery over the past year, working with their teachers, artists and gallery staff to explore the gallery, its collection and exhibitions. Students engaged in a multi-disciplinary approach to the art on display in the gallery, tying in with a number of elements of the school curriculum at primary and secondary level. The children and young people each made two visits to the gallery across the year.
The Prince’s Foundation for Children & the Arts START programme is a three year project between Jerwood Gallery and local schools, creating access to quality arts and cultural experiences for children and young people in Hastings and St Leonards. The project is a partnership between Jerwood Gallery and Culture Shift, and is funded by the Prince’s Foundation for Children & the Arts, as part of a national programme involving 36 arts organisations.
The following schools are involved in the START programme: Dudley Infant Academy, Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, Castledown Primary School, Baird Primary Academy, Helenswood Academy, The Hastings Academy, St Marys Star of the Sea Primary School, Little Ridge Community Primary School, All Saints Primary School, Churchwood Community Primary School and Ore Village Primary Academy.
Jerwood Gallery is pleased to announce that they have secured further funding from The Magdalen and Lasher Charity to extend the START programme to a further five local schools starting September 2014.
