Spotlight is a new series of one-room revolving displays, offering a range of exciting contemporary art for sale. The Spotlight programme at Jerwood Gallery will launch with Philip Hughes: Coastlines.
Philip Hughes: Coastlines draws upon the rich legacy and continuing artistic vitality of East Sussex and Kent, bringing to the fore new work of the coastal landscape. Hastings and the wider locality has a long history of being a magnet and creative catalyst for artists, a number of whom, such as John Banting, John Bratby, Edward Burra and Jeffery Camp RA are represented in the Jerwood Collection of 20th and 21st century British art at Jerwood Gallery.
For Philip Hughes the relationship between landscape and human history lies at the heart of his work. Across a span of some forty years he has walked in five continents to map out a distinctive, distilled vision of landscape in which topography plays a conspicuous role, as it did for early man in establishing his first sacred sites and ceremonial centres. With such priorities, coastlines have furnished Hughes with many of his classic subjects and for this he has chosen to focus largely on three of these at the extremities of the British Isles. All three incorporate two of Hughes’ principal themes: walking and a view of the land from above, including the use of maps.
