Artists Welcome: First Fridays ** 4 Apr 2014 ** Brighton Dome
On the first Friday of each month Brighton Dome welcomes artists in all disciplines to meet and share ideas. Each event features a special guest from the art world who offers a provocation which forms the basis of a discussion.
This month, Dr Harry Witchel is our guest provocateur who will be talking about Music, Soundscape and Their Effects on People.
What effects do sounds have on people, and how can sounds be designed to have specific, pro-social effects on people? While it is a given that sounds (and music) have profound effects on people, the science verifying and guiding this concept is only now making headway. In this guided discussion, Harry Witchel introduces what is known scientifically, and then facilitates a discussion on how artists, makers and producers may curate aspects of soundscape for a variety of effects.
Harry Witchel is the author of the book on music, You Are What You Hear, and he is the Discipline Leader in Physiology at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. In his research he collaborates with Brighton and Hove City Council and the Noise Abatement Society, in which they research the pro-social effects of music on people and crowds.
We have an amazing community of artists in Brighton and it’s great to see this gathering grow each month and witness new ideas and relationships form.
