Jamie McCartney Breast Cancer Awareness Poster featuring naked breasts pressed against the glass of a digital scanner is published today, and priced at £10 for an A2 poster
9 March 2014. Brighton artist Jamie McCartney (of Wall of Vagina fame) said today that the first two posters in his new Breast Cancer awareness project have been published and are on sale, with part of the proceeds going to the charity Breast Cancer UK (BCUK).
“It’s going really well. I currently have work in 4 concurrent shows. It’s all quite exciting. More coming up.”
The posters are A2 size, and one features breasts in bras and the other naked breasts – all pressed against digital scanner glass which makes them look like photocopies from the office party. This everyday, practical quality, combined with the variety of breast shapes and colours, echoes the Wall of Vagina, which has been praised by many women for helping women challenge body image issues.
The posters bear the inscription “One in Eight”, which is the proportion of women who are statistically expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lives. This proportion has been increasing steadily over the past decades, for reasons that are at present not known. The prognosis is good for early detected cancers, hence the campaign to raise awareness of the need for breast examination – see link to Breast Cancer UK, below.
The A2 size posters are priced at £10 and £2.50 from each sale goes to Breast Cancer UK.
McCartney added: “They will shortly be on sale via my websites. They are currently on sale exclusively in Brighton at the Warehouse Gallery.”
The Bra Poster, also priced at £10.McCartney said he will create two more posters, and asks for 150 women to volunteer. He said: “I’m particularly interested in them bringing a selection of bras and am very keen to get more red, white, blue, primary colours and patterned/striped/polkadot bras. I’m also doing the same with pants which will also be used to create a fundraiser poster. I’m also doing a groin one (again with a cancer charity in mind). So any call for models (women only) for all of the above would be great. To that end I am doing two drop-in scanning days where anyone can come along alone or with a group of mates and get scanned at the gallery in a private area. The dates are: Sat 15th March – Espacio Gallery, Bethnal Green Road, London. 12-6pm; and Sat 22nd March – Warehouse Gallery, Gloucester Road, Brighton. 12-6pm. People can just turn up on those days or contact me directly via my email: jamie@jamiemccartney.com”
