OBJECT OR INDIVIDUAL: A symposium on the representation of minority groups
The title of the exhibition — ‘Local Name Unknown…Gypsies? — was taken from a label accompanying Romany artifacts in a museum collection, and reflects the complexities of presenting and classifying objects and cultures within an art historical or anthropological context. Recent developments in museology have influenced our understanding and sensitivity towards how artwork from groups such as the Romany are presented, and this symposium aims to examine the underlying issues and what they mean to us. Delaine LeBas will be joined by a panel of experts from the fields of ‘outsider’ arts, museum curating and research.
